Gide to letter writing for Albertans

Albertans: Voice your concerns, write a letter today!

Below is a Letter Writing Guide to help you with your letter to the Premier, and/or local MLA.  Letter writing is an effective way to have your opinions heard.   These places are public land and thus you have a say in what happens to it.  Remember that original letters, rather tha

n form letters, are much more effective.  Please take a few minutes to express your desire to ensure that these forests are around for future generations….your grandchildren will thank you for it!

Say who you are writing to:

Premier ED STELMACH and/or Your local MLA (check www.assembly.ab.ca )

Alberta Legislature Bldg.
Room 307, 10800 – 97 Ave.
Edmonton, AB  T5K 2B6
FAX (780) 427-1349

To ensure that you are heard:

Drop by his/her office in person!

CC:  Minister of Sustainable Resource Development – Honorable Ted Morton

Room 420 (same address as above) Phone: (780) 415-4815  Fax: (780) 415-4818

State why you are writing:

  • You recognize the urgent need for the establishment of new protected areas in the Foothills Endangered Forests, specifically the Bighorn, the Little Smoky and the Kakwa

Ask a question that you would like an answer to:

  • How can you allow this/these magnificent area(s) to be lost?
  • Why can’t central and northern Alberta enjoy the same benefits that the Calgary region is with Kananaskis Country and its various parks?

Tell a little about yourself and why you're interested in the issue (try to keep this to six sentences or less)

  • concern for the endangered foothills forests, and lack of representation (less than 2% protected)
  • concern for threatened species that call the foothills home (Grizzly Bear, Caribou, Wolverine, Bull Trout)
  • recognize the current threat to the foothills (logging, oil/gas development, lack of recreation access management and enforcement)
  • lack of commitment by the Alberta Government to follow through on its past promises to establish sufficient representation in each ecosystem (through Special Places 2000)
  • recognize the value of protecting this area for its preservation, ecotourism, environmental education, and international significance, rather than industrial development
  •

**Remember: It doesn’t need to be long (one sentence or one page), be respectful, sincere and remind the politician that the decisions they make affect you!

Tell them what you want them to do:

    • Protect the foothills by creating Wildlands and Wilderness Areas in the Kakwa, the Little Smoky and the Bighorn Country, before it is too late.

    Sincerely, Your name and address
